How to type faster

What is WPM?

WPM means words per minute. By convention, one "word" is five characters, including spaces, so the result does not depend on how long the words are. We count only characters you typed correctly, and we show your accuracy next to your speed.

What is a good score?

Many people type at around 40 WPM. Regular typists often reach 60 to 80 WPM, and very fast typists go beyond 100. For gaming, being able to write short messages quickly and without mistakes matters more than a record speed.

Tips to improve

• Accuracy first. Slow down until you make few mistakes, then speed up. Corrections cost more time than typing carefully.
• Look at the screen, not at the keyboard, and keep your eyes one or two words ahead.
• Rest your fingers on the home row and use all ten fingers.
• Practice a few minutes a day. Short regular sessions beat one long one.
